This member of the Asteraceae family was described by Neville Stuart Pillans in 1934. It's found in Namaqualand and the Cape Province in South Africa. The stem will grow to four centimetres in diameter. It preferring grit or other well-drained soil with little water and some sun. The flowers are yellow.
The genera name from the Greek othone, 'a linen cloth or napkin', in allusion to the downy covering of some of the earlier known species. The species name is named after Dr. Hans Herre, 20th century botanist and expert on South African succulents.
