This member of the Asteraceae family was given this name by Rune Bertil Nordenstam and Ernst Jacobus van Jaarsveld in 2005. It is found in central Richtersveld, South Africa. Where it in the wild is growing on the bare cliffs, it can be grown in a well drained mix with some water and little to some sun, as they are found on the shadow side (south). The caudex can grow to eight centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to 30 centimetres in height. The flowers are bright yellow.

The genera name from the Greek othone, 'a linen cloth or napkin', in allusion to the downy covering of some of the earlier known species. The species name referring to it being a cremnophyte, from the Greek, kremnos; 'cliff' and phyton; 'plant'.
