This member of the Hyacinthaceae* family was given this name by John C. Manning and Peter Goldblatt in 2003. It is found in Botswana, Zimbabwe and South Africa, growing in a sandy soil with some water and lots of sun. The bulb can grow to three or even five centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to 30 or even 80 centimetres centimetres in height. The flowers are greenish to brownish. The genera name from Greek: ornithos; 'bird' and gala; 'milk'.
The species name refers to the stiff leaves. *) Accordantly to the latest taxonomic system; APG IV 2016, Hyacinthaceae is now part of the Asparagaceae. This is a winter-grower. Flowering plants from a Japanese sight.
