This member of the Hyacinthaceae family was given this name by Michele Tenore in 1831. It is found in southern Europe, Asia Minor and north Africa, growing in a well drained soil with some water and little to some sun. The caudex can grow to three centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to ten or even fifteen centimetres in height. The flowers are white. The genera name from Greek: ornithos; 'bird' and gala; 'milk'.
The species name means 'straight leaves'. *) Accordantly to the latest taxonomic system; APG IV 2016, Hyacinthaceae is now part of the Asparagaceae.
