This member of the Hyacinthaceae family was given this name by John Charles Manning and Peter Goldblattin 2004. It is found in Namibia and down along the western South Africa to the South Cape, growing in a well drained soil with some water and lots of sun. The bulb will grow to three or even four centimetres, the entire plant reach twelve centimetres. The flowers are yellow. The genera name from Greek: ornithos; 'bird' and gala; 'milk'.
The species name after the area it is found in: Namaqualand. *) Accordantly to the latest taxonomic system; APG IV 2016, Hyacinthaceae is now part of the Asparagaceae.
