ORNITHOGALUM HUMILE

This member of the Hyacinthaceae family was given this name by John C. Manning and Peter Goldblatt in 2004. It is found in the Eastern Cape in South Africa all the way up to Lesotho, growing in a well drained soil with some water and lots of sun. The bulb can grow to four centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to 20 centimetres in height, although many wild plants stop at three centimetres. The flowers are white, green and yellow.. The genera name from Greek: ornithos; 'bird' and gala; 'milk'.

The species name means 'low-growing'. *) Accordantly to the latest taxonomic system; APG IV 2016, Hyacinthaceae is now part of the Asparagaceae.
