This member of the Hyacinthaceae family was given this name by John C. Manning and Peter Goldblatt in 2006. It is found in Little Karoo in western South Africa and in Namibia, growing in a well drained soil with some water and lots of sun. The caudex can grow to five centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to twelve centimetres or more in height. The flowers are white to pale yellow and green. The genera name from Greek: ornithos; 'bird' and gala; 'milk'.

The species name referring to the sticky fruits. *) Accordantly to the latest taxonomic system; APG IV 2016, Hyacinthaceae is now part of the Asparagaceae. This is a winter-grower.
