The caudex can grow to 7,5 centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to 70 or even 150 centimetres in height. The flowers are whitish. The genera name from Greek: ornithos; 'bird' and gala; 'milk'. The species is named after John Donaldson,1799–1876, a Scottish agriculturalist and professor of Botany. *) Accordantly to the latest taxonomic system; APG IV 2016, Hyacinthaceae is now part of the Asparagaceae.
