ORNITHOGALUM DONALDSONII

This member of the Hyacinthaceae family was given this name by Percy James Greenway in 1969. It is found in eastern Ethiopia, Kenya, northern Tanzania and Somalia, growing in a well drained soil with some water and some to lots of sun. The caudex can grow to 7,5 centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to 70 or even 150 centimetres in height. The flowers are whitish. The genera name from Greek: ornithos; 'bird' and gala; 'milk'. The species is named after John Donaldson,1799–1876, a Scottish agriculturalist and professor of Botany. *) Accordantly to the latest taxonomic system; APG IV 2016, Hyacinthaceae is now part of the Asparagaceae.
