This member of the Hyacinthaceae* family was given this name by Mario Martínez-Azorín, Manuel Benito Crespo and Ana Juan in 2011. It is found in the Northern and Western Cape Provinces in South Africa and in Namibia, growing in a well drained soil like grit and sand with some water and lots of sun. The caudex can grow to two or even three centimetres in diameter, the entire plant from five to fifteen centimetres in height. The flowers are white with an outer greenish brown stripe.
The genera name was given by Constantine Samuel Rafinesque in 1837, honouring Nicippe from the Greek mythology. The species name from Latin nanum; 'dwarf-like'.
