NICIPE ANGUINA

This member of the Hyacinthaceae family was given this name by Mario Martínez-Azorín, Manuel Benito Crespo and Ana Juan in 2011. It is found from Grahamstown to Alexandria in southern South Africa, growing in a well drained soil with quite some water and not that much light. The bulb can grow to three centimetres in diameter, the entire plant from ten to 30 centimetres in height. The flowers are white. This is a winter grower in the wild. *) Accordantly to the latest taxonomic system; APG IV 2016, Hyacinthaceae is now part of the Asparagaceae.

The genera name was given by Constantine Samuel Rafinesque in 1837, honouring Nicippe from the Greek mythology. The species name means 'eel or snakelike form'. Wild plants by Craig Peter, Inaturalist.org.
