This member of the Aizoaceae family was given this name by Martin Heinrich Gustav Schwantes in 1928. It is found in South Africa and Botswana, growing in a well drained soil with little water and some sun. The caudex can grow to four centimetres or more, the whole plant to six centimetres. The flowers are big and yellow. The plant can be reproduced both by seeds and cuttings.

The genera name from Latin nana, ' small ' and Greek; -anthos; ' flower '. The species name means 'looking like Aloe '.
