This member of the Rubiaceae family was given this name by Camilla Rose Huxley and Matthew H.P. Jebb in 1993. It is found in Papua New Guinea, growing as an epiphyte with quite some water and some sun. The caudex can grow to 14 centimetres in diameter, 28 long, the entire plant to 30 centimetres in height. The flowers are white with blue-black flecks, the fruits red to orange.
The genera name means 'ant head'. The species name means 'strongly fortified with thorns / spines' for the caudex.
