This member of the Moringaceae family was given this name by Heinrich Gustav Adolf Engler in 1902. It is found in Kenya, south-eastern Ethiopia and Somalia, growing in a well drained soil with some water and lots of sun. The caudex can grow to 30 centimetres in diameter, the few branches not more than 50 centimetres in height. The flowers are bright red.

The genera name from the Malabar vernacular name; Moringo. The species name after the long tubes of the flowers.
