This member of the Nyctaginaceae family was given this name by Asa Gray in 1859. It is found in northern Mexico and south-western U.S.A., growing in a well drained but rich soil with some water and some to lots of sun. The caudex can grow to eight centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to 80 centimetres in height. The flowers are magenta and plentiful.
The genera name is Latin for 'marvellous'.
