This member of the Nyctaginaceae family was given this name by Carl von Linnaeus in 1755. It is found in Guatmala, northern Mexico and south-western U.S.A., growing in a well drained soil with some water and some to lots of sun. The caudex can grow to eight centimetres in diameter, 25 centimetres long, the entire plant to 90 centimetres in height. The flowers are white with a pink throat.
The genera name is Latin for 'marvellous'.
The species name after the 15 centimetre long trumpet-shaped flowers.
