MERWILLA KRAUSSII

This member of the Hyacinthaceae family was given this name by Franz Speta in 1998, based on DNA tests. It is found in southern South Africa, growing in a well drained soil with some water and lots of sun. The bulb will grow to five centimetres in diameter, the leaves up to 35 centimetres long. The flowers are white and blue.

This genus is named after the botanist Frederick Ziervogel Van der Merwe, 1894–1968, who worked on this group. The species is named after Dr. Ferdinand F. von Krauss, 1812-1890, a German scientist, traveller and collector in South Africa. *) Accordantly to the latest taxonomic system; APG IV 2016, Hyacinthaceae is now part of the Asparagaceae.
