This member of the Convolvulaceae family was given this name by Elmer Drew Merrill in 1917. It is found in most of the Pacific costal area, covering forests. It grows in a rich soil with plenty of water and some to lots of sun. The vines will reach for 30 meters, the flowers are white to yellow.

The genera name from a form of the Hebrew name Miriam, which was Latinised to Mary in later years. The species name means 'round shield', referring to shape of leaf and position of stalk in centre of leaf. The with form by Tjut Jul Fatisa Bangun, both Tropical.theferns.info.
