MEDINILLA SCORTECHINII

This member of the Melastomataceae family was described by George King in 1900. It is found from Malaysia through out Indonesia to the Philippines. It grows mainly as an epiphyte, but can be grown in a well drained soil. Should be keep moist, and given some light, but no direct, strong sun. The caudex can grow to six centimetres or more, the stems up to 50 or 60 centimetres. The large orange inflorescence have red flowers.

The genera name for José de Medinilla y Pineda, a Spanish governor for the Marianes. The species name after Scortechin, an Italian minister and botanist in Malaysia in the 1800's.
