This member of the Apocynaceae family was given this name by John Lindley in 1933. It is found in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile and Peru. It has a 20 centimetre subterranean caudex, and it's vines will climb for up to 6,5 meters. It grows in a well drained soil with some to lots of water and some sun. The flowers are from white over crème coloured to pale pink. The genera is named after H. John Mandeville, 1773-1861, an English diplomat in Argentina.
The species name from Latin, suavis; 'sweet' and - olens; 'scented', meaning 'pleasantly fragrant, for the flowers.
