This member of the Cactaceae family was described by William Jackson Hooker in 1848. It is from the northern central part of Mexico. Well-drained soil, some water and light shade to full sun. The stem (almost caudex) grows to 20 centimetres in diameter and the plant can grow to 70 centimetres. The flowers are yellow, and it can also be reproduced by cuttings.

The genera name was given in honour of Maximilian Eugen Joseph,1817-1852, duke of Leuchtenberg and amateur botanist. The species name means 'distinguished' or 'noble'. SubFamily: Cactoideae Tribe: Cacteae
