This member of the Zamiaceae family was given this name by Eduard August von Regel in 1857. It is found in south-eastern Queensland to north-eastern New South Wales in eastern Australia, growing in a well drained sandy soil with quite some water and some sun. The caudex can grow to 80 centimetres in diameter, the entire plant from four to seven metres in height. The cones are dark brownish, both at male and female plants, while the seeds are reddish.
The genera name from the Greek lepidos, a scale and Zamia, a cycad. The species is named after Count Peroffsky (1794-1857), benefactor of the St. Petersburg Botanical Garden.
