This member of the Anacardiaceae family was given this name by Heinrich Gustav Adolf Engler in 1897. It is found in Botswana, Central African Republic, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, South Africa, Somalia, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Zaire and Zimbabwe, growing in a well drained sandy soil or grit, with quite some water and some to lots of sun. The stem can grow 100 centimetres in diameter, the entire plant from three to 22 metres in height. The flowers are from creamy white over greenish to yellow..
The genera name from the Latin Ilana, which refers to the woolly hairy surface of the young leaves of the tree.
