LANNEA ALATA

This member of the Anacardiaceae family was described by Heinrich Gustav Adolf Engler in 1897. It is found in Kenya, Somalia and Tanzania, growing in a well drained soil with some water and lots of sun. The multi stems can grow to 20 centimetres from a 35 centimetre centre, the whole bush from two to six meters in height. The flowers are whitish.

The genera name from the Latin Ilana, which refers to the woolly hairy surface of the young leaves of the tree. The species name means 'winged' or 'with wings'. The roots should be covered in wool-like hairs, made of modified cork cells. Should be good for a madras! Drawings, as photos of live plants seems to be scars.
