This member of the Hyacinthaceae family was given this name by Nicolaas Joseph von Jacquin in 1784. It is found in southern South Africa, growing in a well drained soil with some water and some sun. The bulbs will grow to four centimetres in diameter, the plant reaches ten to fifteen centimetres, 30 with the inflorescence with the orange-red, yellow and creamy white flowers.

The genera name is in honour of the Swiss botanist Prof. Werner de Lachenal (Warnerus de la Chenal)1739-1800. The species name means 'three coloured', which the flowers can be. *) Accordantly to the latest taxonomic system; APG IV 2016, Hyacinthaceae is now part of the Asparagaceae.
