This member of the Euphorbiaceae was described by Ferdinand Albin Pax and Käthe Hoffmann in 1910. It is from Malawi, Mozambique and Zambia, where it grows in a well drained soil with some to lots of water and sun. The caudex can grow from five to ten centimetres in diameter and 30 centimetres long, the stem from 40 up to 100 centimeter. The flowers are white to yellow.

The genera name from the Greek words ἰατρός; iatros, meaning 'physician', and τροφή; trophe meaning 'nutrition', as to medicinal uses. The species name means 'large leaves'. Ton Rulkens' photo photo of the flower from Wikimedia.org.
