This member of the Iridaceae was given this name by Georgi Ivanovich Rodionenko in 1961. It from Asia Minor, growing in a rich soil to grit with some water and some sun. The bulb will grow to six centimetres in diameter, the plant reaches for 20 centimetres. The large flower are blue-violet with a yellow stripe and spots. It can be reproduced both by bulbs and seeds. The genera name after the goddess of the rainbow: Iris, due to the many colours of the flowers in the genera. The species name means 'with a grit on the surface'. Iris cv. katharine hoggkin.
