This member of the Amaryllidaceae family was given this name by William Herbert in 1840. It is found in Mexico, growing in a rich soil with lots of water and lots of sun. The caudex can grow to four centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to 40 centimetres in height. The flowers are white. Hymenocallis from Greek: 'Beautiful membrane'. The species after T. Harris, Esq. of the Grove, Kingsbury, who imported the plant to Spofforth.
