This member of the Smilacaceae family was given this name by Henri Ernest Baillon in 1934. It is found from Indonesia through China all the way out to Vietnam, growing in forests in a rich soil with quite some water and little to some sun. The roots can grow to seven centimetres in diameter, the vines can reach two or three metres or even more. The flowers are pink, and may have red spots.
The genera name means 'a different Smilax ' a genera in the Smilacaceae family. The species name means 'red flower'.
