This member of the Amaryllidaceae family was given this name by Hamilton Paul Traub in 1951. It is found in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay, growing in a well drained soil with quite some water and lots of sun. The bulb can grow to four centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to fourteen centimetres in height. The flowers are orange and yellow. The genera is named for its spectacular flowers. The species for its scaly bulb.
