This member of the Amaryllidaceae family was given this name by William Herbert in 1824. It is found in Argentina and Uruguay, growing in a well sandy soil with some water and lots of sun. The bulb can grow to two and a half centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to 15 centimetres in height. The surprisingly large flowers are usually pink, but almost white forms are found. Flowers in the early autumn. The genera is named for its spectacular flowers. The species is named for its delicate leaves.
