This member of the Berberidaceae family was given this name by Kit Tan and Lulëzim Shuka in 2011. It is found in Albania, growing in a rich but well drained soil with some water and some sun. The caudex can grow to eight or even fifteen centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to 35 centimetres in height. The flowers are yellow.
The genera name from Greek: Gymnos means 'naked' while Latin sperma means 'seed', referring to the unripe seeds which are exposed when the membranous pericarp splits. The species in honour of S. Malo, another botanist.
