GYMNOSPERMIUM ALBERTII

This member of the Berberidaceae family was given this name by Armen Leonovich Takhtajan in 1970. It is found in Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan, growing in a well drained soil with some water and lots of sun. The corm can grow to six centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to fifteen centimetres in height. The flowers are yellow with thin, red lines on the outside

The genera name from the Greek gymnos; 'naked' and Latin sperma; 'seed', referring to the unripe seeds which are exposed when the membranous pericarp splits

The species name for Johann Albert Von Regel, 1845-1909, collector of the type specimen and son of botanist Eduard August von Regel,1815-1892, who gave it its name.
