This member of the Amaryllidaceae family was given this name by Charles Jacques Édouard Morren in 1845. It is found in eastern Brazil, growing in a well drained but rich soil with quite some water and little to some sun. The bulb can grow to five centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to 25 centimetres in height. The flowers are bluish-purple, fading to white.

The genera name for Dr. William Griffith, 19th century botanist and curator of the Botanic Garden in Calcutta. The species name after the area it was found in.
