This member of the Araceae family was given this name by Nicholas Edward Brown in 1901. It is found in Eswatini, Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania, Zimbabwe and Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa, growing in sand and other well drained soil with some water and some sun. The caudex can grow to five centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to 50 centimetres in height. The flowers are white.

The genera name from Greek gony; gonatos, 'knee', and Greek pous; 'foot', for the swellings (nodes) on the leaf stalks. The species name; angustus: narrow; referring to the narrow leaf divisions. The flower by David Scherberich, Aroid.org..
