This member of the Euphorbiaceae family was given this name by Henri Ernest Baillon in 1889. It is found in a huge area of south-western Madagascar, growing in a well drained or sandy soil with some water and lots of sun. The swollen stem can grow to 45 centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to ten or even fifteen centimetres in height. The flowers are cream coloured.

The genera name is an anagram derived from Joachim Otto Voigt,1798–1843. The species name indicate its origin from Madagascar. A large tree in growth by Stephane Philizot, Inaturalist.org. I only found this skinny youngster on Madagascar.
