This member of the Amaryllidaceae family was given this name by Harriet Margaret Louisa Bolus in 1929. It is found in south-western South Africa, growing in a well drained clayish soil with some water and lots of sun. The bulb can grow to four centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to fifteen centimetres in height. The flowers are white to light pink.
The genera name from Greek gethyon, 'bulb'. The species name from the Latin; multifolius meaning 'many leaved', and it is! It is winter-growing but summer-blooming.
