This member of the Amaryllidaceae family was given this name by Dieter Mueller-Dombois in 1986. It is found in southern South Africa, growing in a well drained soil with some water and some to lots of sun. The bulb can grow to four centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to 17 centimetres in height. The flowers are white.
The genera name from Greek gethyon, 'bulb'. The species name after Heinz Ellenberg, 1913-1993, a German biologist and botanist, who worked with Dieter Mueller-Dombois. This is a winter-grower, flowering in the summertime.
