This member of the Amaryllidaceae family was given this name by Harriet Margaret Louisa Bolus in 1929. It is found in southern South Africa, growing in a sandy soil with some water and lots of sun. The bulb can grow to four centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to twelve centimetres in height. The flowers are from white to cream-coloured.
The genera name from Greek gethyon, 'bulb'. The species is named after the bell-shaped flower. This is a winter-grower, flowering in the summertime. Wild plants by Hendrik van Zijl. The fruits by Hendrik van Zijl.
