This member of the Amaryllidaceae family was given this name by Dietrich Müller-Doblies in 1986. It is found in the southern South Africa, growing in a sandy soil with some water and some to lots of sun. The bulb can grow to two centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to four centimetres in height. The flowers are white to pale pink.

The genera name from Greek gethyon, 'bulb'. The species is named after Winsome Fanny Barker, 1907-1994, erstwhile Curator of the Compton Herbarium at Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden in Cape Town. This is a winter-grower, flowering in the summertime. The white flowers by Nick Helme, Inaturalist.nz.
