This member of the Amaryllidaceae family was given this name by Carl von Linnaeus in 1753. It is found in southern South Africa, growing in a well drained clayish soil with some water and lots of sun. The caudex can grow to five centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to ten or even fourteen centimetres in height. The flowers are white with an pink line on the outside.
The genera name from Greek gethyon; 'bulb'. The genera from Latin; afer; 'African'. This is a winter-grower, flowering in the summer.
