FRITILLARIA SEWERZOWII

This member of the Fritillariaceae* family was given this name by Eduard August von Regel in 1868. It is found in Kazakhstan, Kirgizstan, Tadzhikistan and Uzbekistan, growing in a well drained but rich soil with some water and some to lots of sun. The bulb can grow to six centimetres in diameter, the entire plant from fifteen to 50 centimetres in height. The flowers are greenish over yellowish and brownish to deep reddish with a darker centre.

The genera name meaning 'dice-box', for markings on petals. The species is named after Nikolai Alekseevich Severtzov, 1827-1887, a Russian explorer and naturalist. ') Accordantly to the latest taxonomic system; APG IV 2016, Fritillariaceae is now part of the Liliaceae.
