This member of the Fritillariaceae* family was given this name by Pierre Edmond Boissier and Wilhelm von Spruner in 1846. It is found in Albania, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, Greece and on Crete, growing in limestone in forests with some water and some sun. The bulbs can grow to two and a half centimetres, the little plant up to 15 centimetres high.

The genera name meaning 'dice-box', for markings on petals. The species name for its occurrence in Greece, actually; 'Greek'.. ') Accordantly to the latest taxonomic system; APG IV 2016, Fritillariaceae is now part of the Liliaceae.
