This member of the Fouquieriaceae family was given this name by Albert Kellogg in 1885. It is found in the central Baja California and a few places on the mainland Mexico. It grows on the rocky hill-sides in well-drained grit with a little water and lots of sun. The stem will get 50 centimetres wide and reach 18 meters. Can only be reproduced by seeds.

The genera name in honour of: P.E. Fouquier, Parisian medical professor.

The species name means 'column-shaped'. Nice little fat plant at Hoogvliet.
