This member of the Moraceae family was given this name by Alire Raffeneau Delile in 1826. It if found in most of Africa, growing in grit or other well drained soil with some water and some to lots of sun. The stem can grow to three meters in diameter and reach a height of teen meters. The caudex disappears by time, but a massive cluster of roots make up an impressive replacement.
The genera name originates from the old Latin name for Ficus carica which was from the Persian word fica.
The species name means 'bearing glumes', referring to the prominent stipules, which enclose the leaf bud.
