This member of the Euphorbiaceae family was given this name by Alexander Gilli, in 1974. It is found in south-eastern Kenya and north-eastern Tanzania, growing in a well drained soil with some water and lots of sun. The caudex can grow to seven centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to 100 or even 180 centimetres in height. The flowers are yellowish-brown. The genera is named after Euphorbos, the Greek physician of King Juba II of Numidia. The species is named from Latin; tenuis; 'thin' and spinosa; 'thornes'.
