This member of the Euphorbiaceae family was given this name by Ferdinand Albin Pax in 1905. It is found in south-western South Africa, growing in a well drained soil with little water and lots of sun. The swollen stem can grow to ten centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to 50 or even 100 centimetres in height. The flowers are greenish yellow. The genera is named after Euphorbos, the Greek physician of King Juba II of Numidia. The species name honours the German botanist Seimar Schönland, 1860-1940.
