This member of the Euphorbiaceae family was given this name by Francis Buchanan-Hamilton in 1825. It is found in Bangladesh, India and Nepal, growing in a well drained soil with some water and some sun. The swollen root can grow to eight centimetres in diameter and up to 20-30 centimetres long. The plant can also grow up to 20 centimetres. The flowers are cream to dark pink.
The genera name; Euphorbia dates back to the first century BC, where King Juba II of Mauritania used it in a reference to his doctor, Euphorbos, and that name was kept as a generic name by Carl von Linnaeus.
