This member of the Fabaceae family was given this name by John Hutchinson in 1933. It is found in Angola, Botswana, South Africa, Eswatini and Tanzania, growing in a well drained soil with some to lots of water and some to lots of sun. The caudex can grow into a 40 centimetres in diameter stem, the entire plant to 12 metres in height. The flowers are scarlet, the beans black and red.

The genera name from Greek; eryhros; 'red' for the mostly red flowers. The species name means 'loose-stamened'. Another flower by Ori Fragman-Sapir, Powo.science.kew.org.
