This member of the Fabaceae family was given this name by Ernst Heinrich Friedrich Meyer in 1836. It is found in Botswana, Eswatini, Mozambique, eastern South Africa and eastern Zimbabwe, growing in a rather rich but still well drained soil with some to lots of water and lots of sun. It does not form a classic nice caudex, but young plants have have. The mature tree can reach five or even eight metres. The flowers are bright red.

The genera name from Greek; eryhros; 'red' for the mostly red flowers. The species name means 'very wide' for the leaves.
