This member of the Ranunculaceae family was described by Carl Linnaeus under the name Helleborus hyemalis in 1753, and later in 1807 by Richard Anthony Salisbury shifted it to Eranthis. It is found in Bulgaria, France, Italy, Lebanon, Syria and Yugoslavia (and is spread a lot by humans), growing in forests. It flowers with the rather large yellow flowers in the late winter. The stem will reach for five centimetres, the corms are up to 2,5 centimetres. It can be reproduced both by seeds and corms.

The genera name means 'spring flower'. The species name means 'winter'. This is a winter-grower, or real early spring-grower. The fruit.
